ResNet for Mac OS X

Platform: Mac

Introduction

Note

The images may appear slightly different on Mac OS X version 10.2, the information is the same.

ResNet is the physical cabling and support services that make it possible for students living on campus to use their own personal computers to access computing, library, and academic services directly from their rooms. Each student in a University Residence Hall or Campus Apartment has a dedicated Ethernet hook-up that links his or her personal computer to the Internet.

You must follow all conditions of use while using ResNet, including:

Configuring ResNet

Note

The configuration instructions for using ResNet and OpenPort are the same.

To use ResNet, you need the following:

  • A 10/100 Ethernet adapter suitable for your computer
  • A category 5 Ethernet cable

If you are not comfortable installing your Ethernet adapter, or if you encounter problems during installation, contact UBMicro, UB Commons Suite 109, at (716) 645-3554.

  1. Select System Preferences from the Dock and open Network.
  2. Click Location. Select New Location from the pull-down menu.
  3. Enter a location name (e.g., ResNet) into the Name your new location field, then click OK.

  4. Click Show, then select Built-in Ethernet from the pull-down menu.

Configuring the TCP/IP Stack

Note

If you are using Mac OS X 10.2, the Configure IPv4 option is simply labeled as Configure.

  1. Select the TCP/IP tab.
  2. Click Configure IPv4. Select Using DHCP from the pull-down menu.

  3. Click once in the Search Domains text box, and remove any information already present.
  4. Enter the following domain names in the Search Domains text box:
    buffalo.edu
    acsu.buffalo.edu
    resnet.buffalo.edu
    openport.buffalo.edu
    cse.buffalo.edu
    eng.buffalo.edu
  5. Click Apply Now to keep the changes you have made.

Your computer is now properly configured to connect to ResNet. Each time you want to connect to the Internet to use software such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, MacSSH, Fetch, or Mulberry, you must follow the directions in the next section, Establishing Your ResNet Connection.

Establishing Your ResNet Connection

  1. Open a web browser.

Note

After four hours of inactivity you will be disconnected from ResNet. Every time you reconnect to ResNet you will need to follow these steps.

  1. When your browser first tries to connect to ResNet, it will be redirected to UB NetPass. UB NetPass is a system maintained by the University at Buffalo which scans computers attempting to connect to ResNet for viruses or other harmful software programs.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed through UB NetPass. The CIT documentation for UB NetPass can be located at http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/
    Documentation/gen/UBNetPass.html
. Refer to the UB NetPass documentation to complete the ResNet logon process and begin browsing the Internet.

You do not need to sign off from the firewall once you are finished accessing the Internet.
