Introduction

The Microsoft Office 2004 suite is licensed to all students, faculty, and staff currently attending or working at the University at Buffalo. Faculty and staff are licensed to install Microsoft software on university and personally owned computers for academic or work related purposes. The suite is a software package containing popular office development software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows Messenger, and the Microsoft Entourage email client.

Pre-Installation Notes

Before installing Microsoft Office 2004, please check the minimum hardware and system requirements for computers, listed at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/howtobuy.aspx?pid=sysreq.

Important Licensing Notes

You are only permitted to install Microsoft Office 2004 onto a single computer that is personally owned by you, and you may reinstall the software as many times as needed onto this computer only. You are not permitted to share the software with anyone else, burn it to a CD, or make it publicly available through such methods as file sharing.

Installing Microsoft Office 2004

    Note

    If you have already installed Microsoft Office 2004 from a CD, you do not need to install the download version. The CD version is the same as the download version.

  1. When the Microsoft Office 2004 window appears, double-click on the Office Setup Assistant icon.

  2. When the Setup Assistant window appears, click Next.

  3. Enter your Administrator user name and password. This is the user name and password you use to log into your computer, and is most likely different from your UBITName and Password. Click OK.

  4. Read the End-User License Agreement, then click Next.

  5. Enter your first and last name into the First/Last Name text field. All other fields are optional, but entering additional information allows Microsoft Office applications to automatically configure themselves for certain document types (e.g., letters, envelopes, etc.). Click Next.

  6. Note

    You should contact the CIT Help Desk if you experience any problems installing or using Microsoft Office 2004.

    Write down your Microsoft product identification number, then click Next. This number will be required if you ever need to contact Microsoft for support with Microsoft Office 2004.

  7. Select the installation location and type you want to use, then click Install. The default location and type are highly recommended.

  8. Please wait while Microsoft Office 2004 installs onto your computer.

  9. When the Congratulations window appears, click Finish.

Post-Installation Notes

After Microsoft Office 2004 has installed onto your computer, it is highly recommended that you update your installation using Office Update, in order to ensure that you have the latest security fixes and feature updates.
