Mulberry 3.1.6 for Mac
Documentation table of contents.
Introduction
Electronic mail, or email, is a convenient way to exchange information with friends, family, or professors, anywhere in the world. You must first establish an Internet connection before using email. On-campus students must authenticate to the ResNet firewall, while off-campus students must connect via telephone modem, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), or a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the UBVPN Client.
Mulberry is a graphical email application that uses the popular Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) for reading mail stored on the University at Buffalo's mail server. This allows you to read your email from Public Computing Service Areas, departmental labs, your personal computer -- even your friend's computer. Mulberry supports a variety of protocols: the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) protocol for sending and receiving attachments with messages; the Internet Message Support Protocol (IMSP) for storing mail preferences and address books on a remote server; and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for looking up addresses in global address lists.
Configuring Mulberry for Use at UB
Most of Mulberry's preferences have been pre-configured for you. To add to or change your preferences you must have logged in and out of Mulberry with your account at least once. This creates a preferences data file associated with your user account. You must provide the following information if you are a first-time user.
- To open Mulberry, double-click the Macintosh HD icon on your Desktop, select Applications, Mulberry, then MulberryCarbon.

- Log into Mulberry by entering your UBITName and Password into the appropriate fields. You must have an active Internet connection and be connected to the University at Buffalo's network via ResNet, OpenPort, or through UBVPN to connect. Mulberry does not offer Secure SMTP. If you are using a third-party ISP such as Verizon or Time Warner you must first establish a connection using UBVPN.
- If you have any previously saved preferences files, they will display after you log in. Select the preference file you would like to use, then click Open.
-
You can use Mulberry in two different views. The default view is the 3-pane Window. The other view is Use Separate Windows. To switch your view, select Layout from
the Window menu, then choose your preferred
view.

-
Select Preferences from the Mulberry
menu. Make sure the Simple option is selected on the right of the window. Enter your name into the Real
Name field. This is the name that appears on the messages
you send out (e.g., John Doe).
Click OK to save your preferences.
Note
UB blocks SMTP port 25 from all on-campus locations. Attempting to use SMTP servers other than smtp.buffalo.edu may not work.
- If you are in the Separate Windows view, select IMAP from the Window menu.
- If you wish to make additions or changes to your preferences, see the Mulberry Reference Guide, located in the folder where you installed Mulberry.
