Documentation
Mulberry 3.1.6 Use for Mac
Documentation table of contents.
The 3-pane Window
Note
The active pane will have a rectangular border around it.
The 3-pane Window displays either mail or contact information in each
of its resizable panes. The List Pane (left)
contains buttons to switch between viewing Mail and Contacts.
The Items Pane (upper right) shows the contents of the Mailbox. When more than one Mailbox is shown, each has a tab at the top of the screen. When the List Pane is set to Contacts, the Items Pane shows the contents of the selected address book.
The Preview Pane (lower right) shows a selected message and its associated addressing and attachment information. When the List Pane is set to Contacts, the Preview Pane shows the contents of a selected address book.
Clicking the button in the upper right-hand corner of each pane will cause the window to zoom in to the specific pane. Clicking the button again will zoom back out to the 3-pane Window.
Managing Mailboxes
Note
Mulberry Mailboxes may be called folders in other email applications.
- If you are using the Separate Windows view to open a Mailbox and view its contents, select the Mailbox and press Enter, or double-click on the Mailbox name. If you are using the 3-pane Window view, just select the desired Mailbox to view its contents in the upper right pane of your window. You can also double-click on the Mailbox from this view to open it in a new window.

toolbar. Enter the Mailbox name, then click OK.

Managing Messages
Managing messages is accomplished through the Mailbox window. If you are using the Separate Windows view, open a Mailbox and view its contents by selecting the Mailbox. Press Return or double-click on the Mailbox name. If you are using the 3-pane Window view, select the desired Mailbox. The Mailbox contents will display in the upper right-hand pane of your window. You can also double-click on the Mailbox from this view to open it in a new window.
- To open a message for reading in the Separate Windows view, select the message and press Return, or double-click the message. In the 3-pane Window view, simply select the message to display its contents in the lower right pane.
- To delete a message, select the message and click the Delete button to mark it for deletion. The message will not be deleted from the server until you click the Expunge button.
- To copy a message to another Mailbox, select the message and drag it to a Mailbox name in the server window.
Messages are displayed with symbols identifying the status of each message:
| Messages that have arrived since the Mailbox was last checked (recent). | |
| Messages that have never been opened (unseen). | |
| Messages that have been opened at least once (seen). | |
| Messages that have been replied to (answered). | |
| Messages that are drafts (draft). | |
| Messages that have been marked as deleted (deleted), and have not yet been expunged. |
Printing and Saving Messages
To print a message, select the message and choose File, then Print.
To save a message, select the message and choose File, then Save.
Saving Attachments
When viewing a message in the Message window, Mulberry displays attachments
under the Parts Header area shown here:
The Parts Disclosure triangle expands or collapses the display of the parts table, which lists a message's attachments.
Parts can be saved to disk by selecting them and either double-clicking them, selecting Extract Parts from the Message menu, or by right-clicking on a part, then selecting Extract Parts.
You can choose how Mulberry behaves when it downloads an attachment to
disk. Select Mulberry, then Preferences.
Make sure the Advanced button is selected,
then click Attachment. Click on
the Receiving button. Select the desired option
under Save to Disk.
Composing New Messages
- Select New Message from the File menu, click the Draft button, or click the Reply button while reading a message to open a message composition window.
- Enter email addresses separated by commas, or click and drag addresses from an address book into the To field. Press the Tab key or click the next field.
- To add a Cc (carbon copy) or a Bcc (blind carbon copy) field, click the Add button for the respective field. Both fields are optional.
- The Cc field is used to send a copy
of the message to another party.
- The Bcc field is used to send a blind copy of the message to another party, so that the email recipients cannot see to whom else the message was sent.
- Supply a subject in the Subject field.
- Type the message in the message text area.
- To add an attachment, click the Attach button and select the desired filename in the browser.
- When ready, click Send.

Address Book Manager
You can set optional flags on each address book for such tasks as opening on start-up, customization for nicknames, and searching address entries. Set this up by clicking on any or all of the three triangles to the left of the address book name. These options can also be found by right-clicking on the address book name and selecting Properties.

- Click New.
- Enter the name of your new address book (e.g.,
New Address Book). Select Personal or
Global Address Book.
Address Book Search Window
The Address Book Search window performs searches for addresses in the local and remote address books or the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).
- It is possible to look up an individual's information in your address
book or the UB LDAP directory. Select Address, then Search for Addresses. The UB LDAP directory has
already been configured in your Mulberry client.
- The in Address Books option will search
your local and remote address books.

- The using LDAP option will search all
LDAP directories set in your address preferences.
- The text field allows you to enter the text that you wish to search. Pressing Enter on the keyboard will initiate the search.
Address Books
The Single and Group buttons inside your address books are used to toggle the display of the single address and group lists. Clicking on these buttons will hide or display the corresponding lists.
- To create a new address, click inside the single address window, then click the New button in the address book header. Enter the values you prefer and click OK.
- To create a new group, click inside the group window, then click the New button in the address book header. Enter the values you would like and click OK.
Local Mailboxes
Note
If you are not sure if you want to use Local Mailboxes, contact the CIT Help Desk at (716) 645-3542 or email cit-helpdesk@buffalo.edu.
Most users prefer to use Mulberry as an IMAP client because it allows them to view their INBOX and all of its contents from any computer connected to the University at Buffalo's network. However, there may be certain cases where you want to keep your messages in a Mailbox whose contents are stored on your computer's hard drive.
In certain situations, this can be a very useful feature. For instance, users who are reaching the maximum capacity of their email quota may want to transfer some of the messages saved in their other Mailboxes to their hard drive to free up quota space. All of the features available for mail saved online in your IMAP account are available for messages saved in Local Mailboxes, such as searching and sorting saved messages.
Using Local Mailboxes is an optional feature, and is not required to use Mulberry. If you save messages to local folders, they will not appear when you use another computer, and cannot be accessed from anywhere other than the computer to which they were saved.
To set up Local Mailboxes in Mulberry:
- Click File, then Preferences. Select Advanced preferences using the radio button on the right side of the window. Click Accounts.

- Click the Account pull-down menu, then select New.

- In the Account Name field, create a name for your local account. Note that this is not the name of a local folder, it is the name of the local account your folders will reside in. Select Local Mailbox from the Account Type pull-down menu. Click OK.

-
In the Local tab, make sure that Use Default Location is selected. The File Format pull-down menu should be set to Automatic. Click OK to save your settings.
-
You should now have a new mail account called Local Mailboxes.

- A mail account cannot store messages without a specific Mailbox to hold them in. To create a Mailbox for the Local Mailboxes account, ctrl-click on the account, then select Create.
- The Create Mailbox window will appear. You may choose to create a Mailbox that stores messages, or one that stores other Mailboxes in order to create a heirarchy. Name the Mailbox anything you want by entering a title in the Name field. Click OK to create the Mailbox.
-
Your Local Mailbox should now appear. You can drag messages to this Mailbox to store them there from any other Mailbox in your accounts. You can also drag entire directories to your Local Mailbox, but any heirarchy or directory structure will not be upheld. Any files already in directories will all be placed together in the Local Mailbox where you have dragged them. An easy solution to this issue is to create any directory structure you want on your Local Mailbox beforehand, and drag individual files to their intended destinations.

Note
Users attempting to store their email on departmental file storage space or other remote devices may wish to choose Specify Location and use the Choose button to browse available storage locations. Novice users should not attempt to choose a local storage location.
Note
Your local mail account will show up whenever you connect to the University at Buffalo's IMAP server through Mulberry. However, your Local Mailboxes will only show up from the machine you have created them on, and your local files may only be manipulated from that location.
Note
Resetting your IMSP preferences at any point will remove your local email account, but not your saved Local Mailboxes. In order to retrieve your local mail after resetting your IMSP preferences, you must create a new local email account and create Mailboxes in the same location with the exact same names as the ones you had before.
