Firefox Plug-ins for Mac

Platform: Mac

Introduction

Like most web browsers, Firefox relies on small software programs known as plug-ins to view or use files in third-party formats that are embedded in web pages. These plug-ins can be downloaded and installed either externally or through the Firefox browser. Once the plug-in is installed, all embedded files that use it will load and play/view properly until the plug-in is uninstalled. Common plug-ins address the viewing of Adobe .pdf files through Adobe Reader, viewing embedded .wma files (Windows Media Player), and using or viewing multimedia files made with Flash or Shockwave.

Installing Plug-ins

Installing plug-ins for Firefox means you must find the plug-ins you want and install them from a source outside of the browser itself. Though most plug-ins will install automatically in Mac OSX as they are needed, installing plug-ins manually is also an option. The best resource to find and install plug-ins is through the plug-ins section of the Mozilla Update web site, located at
https://pfs.mozilla.org/plugins/. Mozilla Update has many of the most commonly used plug-ins available for easy access, and has an intuitive search feature built directly into the site. Mozilla Update is also a good resource to find themes and extensions for Firefox.
