Using UBVPN for Mac OS X
Documentation table of contents.
Firewall Issues
If you are running a firewall or a router for a home network, you must allow the following types of traffic to pass through: UDP port 500 (ISAKMP), IP protocol 50 (ESP), and UDP port 4500 (for use with NAT-T, for users utilizing NAT).
Using UBVPN
Note
Classic Mac applications do not use the UBVPN tunnel.
To use the UBVPN Client from off campus, you must first connect to the Internet using an off-campus ISP.
You can also use the UBVPN Client to connect to a Wireless Access Point on campus if you have a wireless network card installed in your machine.
- Launch the UBVPN Client by clicking on an alias made during installation,
or double-clicking on Macintosh HD, then
Applications, and selecting VPNClient.
If you receive an error stating the
VPN daemon could not be started, or the kernel module is not loaded, verify that you are connected to the Internet via your third-party ISP.
If the problem still occurs, reboot your machine and try again.
- Select offcampus from the Connection Entry choices if you are connecting from an off-campus ISP such as Time Warner Road Runner or Verizon DSL. Select oncampus from the Connection Entry choices if you are connecting in a Wireless Internet Zone on campus.
- Click Connect.
- Enter your UBITName
and Password into the Username and Password
fields, respectively, when the User Authentication window appears, then click OK.

- When the VPN Client Banner appears, click Continue
to connect.
UBVPN Session Timeout
The UBVPN session times out after 30 minutes of inactivity for off-campus users, or 24 hours of use. If UBVPN times out and your IPSec connection is terminated, click OK and bring up the UBVPN window again.
Power management modes differ from OS to OS, and from laptop to laptop. When your computer goes into sleep mode, the wireless network card loses power and drops your Internet connection with no warning message. You must stop and restart the UBVPN Client in order to reconnect.
Disconnecting from UBVPN
When you finish accessing UB's network and want to disconnect from UBVPN, click the Disconnect button located on the top left-hand side of the UBVPN screen. (It is located in the same spot that the Connect icon was located.)
