LDAP (UB Online Phone Book)

Platform: General

Introduction

The LDAP service (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is the University at Buffalo’s online phone book. LDAP provides a means of searching for email addresses, office addresses, and phone numbers for UB faculty, staff, and students.

Who Is Listed?

All faculty, staff, and students affiliated with UB have their institutional data listed in the UB Online Phone Book. The only exceptions to this are those students who have requested that this data not be made available. Students who request not to have their institutional data released will still have an email entry in the online directory. However, no name or other identifying information will be associated with this entry.

The Information Release & Directory Publication Policy describes how students may restrict the release of their personal information, in addition to the implications of such prevention. It is available at the following URL:

http://studentresponse.buffalo.edu/record/ferpa.shtml.

Looking Up Information

There are several ways to look up information in the UB Online Phone Book. One way is electronic. Visit the following URL:

http://ldap.buffalo.edu.

Select the link marked Search the UB E-Directory. It is possible to search for a full name, a surname, an email address, a UBITName, or a telephone number. Select the desired search type by using the buttons at the bottom of the window, and then enter the desired information in the search for text box.

Note

The LDAP directory is not case-sensitive, so a search for j*doe will produce the same results as a search for J*DOE or J*Doe.

You can use the wildcard character (*) to help with your search. Searching for the surname *ith, for example, would bring up all surnames that end in ith, including Smith. Searching for the full name j*smith would bring up all names starting with j and ending with smith, including John Smith or Jane Naismith.

To begin your search, click the Query button and then click Continue.

It is also possible to access the information in the UB Online Phone Book through a number of email clients, including Mulberry and Netscape.

To access LDAP from Mulberry, select Using LDAP from the Addresses menu and then select the search option. Click on the Find Items tab and select Using LDAP. If the Using LDAP option is not listed, see the CIT documents Mulberry for Windows or Mulberry for Mac for information on configuring Mulberry properly.

Note

Some entries may indicate that the account owner has not verified his email address information. While the account listed does exist for the person indicated, it may not be the preferred address. If possible, you should check any unverified email addresses with the recipient in advance of sending email. Some entries indicate that an email address has not been set. This does not mean that the person does not have an email account, only that it is not listed in the database.

Updating Information

A user can update published email addresses and other information. LDAP classifies other information (such as name or office location) as institutional data. The Student Response Center provides this information for students, and Human Resource Services does the same for faculty and staff.

To update institutional data, students should contact the Student Response Center at 232 Capen Hall on the North Campus. You may call them at 716-645-2450 or toll free at 1-866-838-7257. You may also contact the Student Response Center through email at srcenter@buffalo.edu.

Student information is updated one to two days after the Student Response Center has officially processed paperwork.

Faculty and staff who wish to update institutional data should contact the appropriate Personnel Liaison within the department of Human Resource Services. Human Resource Services updates the information in one to two days.

To update entrant information, visit the following URL:

http://ldap.buffalo.edu.

Choose the link marked Update Your Entry in the E-Directory. You will be prompted for your UBITName. Enter it, and then click Go to Your Entry. You may change or enter any information listed. When you are satisfied with your entry information, enter your UBIT Password and click the Send Changes button.
