Language Requirements by Major

Certain majors in the College of Arts & Sciences have language requirements which differ from the standard General Education requirements.

These CAS majors have NO foreign language requirement:
Art/BFA, Dance/BFA, Bioinformatics/BS, Medicinal Chemistry/BS, Music Theatre/BFA, Theatre/BFA

These CAS majors have the standard General Education language requirement, i.e., to demonstrate proficiency at a second-semester level:
African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Art/BA (Studio Art), Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computational Physics, Economics, Film Studies, Geography, Geological Sciences, History, Linguistics, Mathematics, Media Study, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, SSC/Cognitive Science, SSC/Environmental Studies, SSC/Health & Human Services, SSC/Legal Studies, SSC/Urban & Public Policy, Sociology, Speech and Hearing Science, Women's Studies

These CAS majors must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language at the 4th-semester level:
Art History, Asian Studies (must take Chinese, Japanese or Korean), Classics (Ancient History, Classical Civilization, and Mediterranean Archaeology concentrations; must take Ancient Greek or Latin), Dance/BA, English, Music/BA, Music Performance/MusB, Theatre/BA

These CAS majors must take language study beyond the intermediate level:
Classics (Classics, Greek, and Latin concentrations must take Ancient Greek or Latin), French, German, Italian, SSC/International Studies, Spanish
