Like every aspect of academic life, the job search requires extensive
preparation and research. The English department has a Placement
Service whose purpose is solely to assist and advise graduate students
during their job searches.
The placement director organizes regular placement meetings, keeps
students posted on job openings, updates and makes available a handbook
containing guidelines for the job search, maintains a listserv to
disseminate information, makes sure that each applicant's dossier
is in order, helps with the preparation and revision of resumes
and cover letters, and enlists other faculty's help to conduct mock
interviews. The director is also in charge of inspecting students'
reference files in order to spot omissions and problems while keeping
recommendation letters confidential.
This help is available to master's and doctoral students who are
seeking employment within or outside academia. It is a supplement
to the important resources that are already available through UB's
Career Planning and Placement Center.
The energy and resources the English department channels into its
placement efforts have resulted in a remarkable placement record
