Like every aspect of academic life, the job search requires extensive preparation and research. The English department has a Placement Service whose purpose is solely to assist and advise graduate students during their job searches.

The placement director organizes regular placement meetings, keeps students posted on job openings, updates and makes available a handbook containing guidelines for the job search, maintains a listserv to disseminate information, makes sure that each applicant's dossier is in order, helps with the preparation and revision of resumes and cover letters, and enlists other faculty's help to conduct mock interviews. The director is also in charge of inspecting students' reference files in order to spot omissions and problems while keeping recommendation letters confidential.

This help is available to master's and doctoral students who are seeking employment within or outside academia. It is a supplement to the important resources that are already available through UB's Career Planning and Placement Center.

The energy and resources the English department channels into its placement efforts have resulted in a remarkable placement record over the years. Some of the institutions where our graduates have recently obtained tenure-track positions include:

Auburn University Ithaca College
Ball State University Penn State, Erie
Brooklyn College Rhode Island College
College of William and Mary South Florida Community College
