ETHICAL ISSUES IN MANAGED CARE: LESSONS FROM MINNESOTA

Friday October 24, 1997
11:00AM, Webster Hall
Millard Fillmore Gates Circle

As a "mature" managed care market, the recent health care experience in Minnesota is a valuable source of lessons for the ways managed care affects health care delivery generally, and specifically the ethical issues that arise. Minnesota, and the Twin Cities in particular, is heavily "penetrated" by a variety of managed care systems, from staff models to PPOs, to fully integrated networks for the delivery of care. This presentation will describe the state of managed care in Minnesota and discuss some of the ethical issues that come with managed care, including: financial incentives to physicians, physician satisfaction with practicing in a managed care environment, access to care and limitations on services, purchasing groups and contracting for services, and organizational ethics for managed care entities.
