In accordance with the statutory requirements of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, students in the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning are provided full access to their educational records, the right to challenge the content of such records, and the right to limit transferability and access of such records without their express written consent.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) [20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99] is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA gives rights to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

Express written consent from the student is required before information can be released from an individual's educational record in all cases except those specifically exempted by law. Release of such records to any other college, prospective employer, or agency will occur only with written permission of the student or upon subpoena.

Express written consent from the student for the release of an individual's educational record is valid for one academic semester, and must be on file with the student's academic department, the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning's Office of Advisement Administration, and University at Buffalo Student Academic Records.

There is certain directory information which the University at Buffalo may release without student permission:

>> the student's name;
>> address (including e-mail);
>> telephone number;
>> date and place of birth;
>> academic field of study;
>> dates of attendance;
>> degrees and awards received, and,
>> the most recent previous educational institution attended by the student.

However, students may prevent the release of this information by completing the appropriate form with UB Student Academic Records in 232 Capen Hall on the University at Buffalo's North Campus.
