Sunday Times, Perth 3 March 1996 Chronology of dispute at campus SEPTEMBER 1988. Dr Rindos a visiting scholar at Australian National University, met Professor Sandra Bowdler. She asked him to apply for a job in her department. He was offered it in January 1989. June 1989. After six months in migration processing, he arrived and began teaching. November l9B9. Became acting head of the department of archaeology. August 1990. First yearly performance report judged him satisfactory. Sept/Dec 1990. Rindos unsuccessfully tried to discuss with Bowdler management problems with her department. February 1991. Former deputy vice-chancellor Professor Bob Parfitt met Rindos and arranged to transfer him and students, who separately complained to him earlier, to geography department. June 1991. Bowdler wrote a report on Rindos criticising all aspects of his performance, including teaching, administration, personality, and relations with her. He saw this report for the first time in July 1995. November 1991. A formal review of archaeology department held following Parfitt's recommenda- tion. Vice-Chancellor Fay Gale was told of reasons and difficulties in the department. January 1992. Bowdler replied to review report claiming problems did not exist in her department and the appearance of any problem was due to a campaign waged by Rindos. Her claims were rejected by reviewers. The reviewers sent secret summary of findings to top administrators. February 1992. Gale, in confidential meeting with history department, offered favorable terms if they accepted Bowdler as a departmental member. They refused. Later in the month the review committee reported to the planning and resources committee which resolved that a full investigation be launched by Gale. March 1992 Gale twice met Professors Stan Hotop and Doug Clyde. They were assigned the restricted task of evaluating letters already sent to Gale. Their report did not constitute a full investigation as required by the planning and resources committee. April 1992. Gale met Bowdler. No written record was kept but on Bowdler's insistence Gale provided her written questions for answering. May l992 Meetings in department of anthropol- ogy led to a decision to accept Bowdler. Gale announced archaeology department to be merged into anthropology. Another revie v promised for end of 1995 but this was never done. Rindos and his students were excluded from the merger and he was left without any department. November 1992. Dr Mike Partis, head of science and agriculture division, wrote two reports on why Rindos should not be tenured. Neither mentioned problems with his academic performance. UWA received advice that non-academic reasons would not hold up. December 1992. Gale scheduled new tenure review of Rindos that was chaired by Professor Bob Wood. One condition was that neither Rindos nor his representatives could address the review. February 1993. After a preliminary meeting the Wood committee recommended Rindos not be tenured. The committee left questions of whether Rindos's alleged insufficient output was his fault or due to other factors. April 1993. Rindos replied to committee saying its tentative recommendations to deny tenure were based on improper procedures and incorrect and incomplete data. May 1993. Rindos met Gale who refused to discuss his reply to the committee's recommendations. She raised new reasons for denying tenure but agreed he could write a new report in reply, then refused to accept it. June 1993. The anatomy department offered to take on Rindos as a member but Gale refused them funding for his position. Gale sent letter terminating Rindos. Rindos's appeal to senate was refused.
