Sunday Times, 26 March 1995 New Role for Rindos An unemployed Perth academic who was sacked by the University of WA has been elected to a prestigious international scientific society. Archaeologists Dr David Rindos was sacked by UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Fay Gale in June 1993 for allegedly not coming up to the high academic standards of her campus. Although his sacking prompted more than 50 internationally renowned archaeologists to write UWA backing Dr Rindos' merits, he has been unable to win reinstatement. But his case is set to be heard by the Governor, Major-General Michael Jeffrey, who also hold the prestigious position of Visitor to the University of WA. This week Dr Rindos was notified he had just been elected to the Sigma Xi International Scientific Research Society The requirement to be elected is a person must have shown noteworthy achievement as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science. Dr Rindos is author of the highly regarded *Origins* *of* *Agriculture* which has been translated into Spanish. His works are listed as the primary reference under two subject headings in the *Encyclopedia* *Britannica*. Commenting on his election, Dr Rindos said: "I would like to publicly thank the society for honoring me in this way. "I hope this judgement of my worth as a scientist, as provided by other scientists, will put a proper perspective on the allegations of poor academic performance which unfortunately were made about me by Professor Gale and others at UWA."
