| NELD Bibliography Helpful Hints! |
The search mechanism is case insensitive and ignores all
non-alphanumeric characters. It also operates under Boolean
"and" parameters which means that it will attempt to
match *all* keywords input into every section. So
only provide the least number of significant keywords, and
then add more to tighten your search if necessary later.
A Boolean "and" search of all authors names as listed in the bibliographic database. The engine will attempt to match your input with all names listed. Note that the names are typically listed as published, so an individual's name may well have been published in varying forms over time; e.g. John William Smith may vary from J.W. to John W. to John to J. to John William.
This input is inclusive, so you may specify one specific year in either box, or specify a block of time by inputing a beginning year in box one, a final year in box two, or both.
A Boolean "and" search of the title of the work as published. Do not input more words than necessary.
A Boolean "and" search of the remaining part of the bibliographic reference, including the title of a book for a chapter or collection of articles, the journal title, editor(s) names, publisher, place of publication, page/volume/issue number(s), and so on.
A Boolean "and" search of all relevant geopolitical regions mentioned in the work. The pull down menu shows all possible regions identified in the bibliography. You can select more than one of these. Use Control-Left_Click (or Apple) to select independent items, or Shift-Left_Click to select an inclusive grouping.
A Boolean "and" search of all lithic types mentioned in the work, as identified by NELD contributors. Since the search will attempt to match *all* keywords input, it is best to only provide major keywords; e.g. "onondaga chert" rather than "onondaga limestone formation chert". In general, look for the correct geological material type name, but common informal names in use by archaeologists will likely be listed when used by the article. Also, we have attempted to anticipate varietal names such as rhyolite versus metarhyolite and both should work for common instances.
A Boolean "and" search of all notations of archaeological significance for the work as supplied by NELD contributors. See the glossary for a partial list of the phrases in use.
