AGSA Minutes - November 12, 2004
In Attendance:
Stephanie Boyd, Matthew Smith, Amanda Shero, Consuel Ionica, Emily Hammerl, Christopher Wahlfeld, Daniel Grover, Patrick Fazioli, Deborah Hutchinson, Lori Eldridge, Brandon Lundy and Glorimar Pagan
- The first item discussed was the spring colloquium series. In an effort to maximize the funds available, it was suggested that we search both our own faculty as well as the area schools. Suggestions for speakers should be forwarded to Lori Eldridge or Brandon Lundy.
- Daniel Grover offered the idea of obtaining more funding from the GSA by holding a symposium during the year. This idea works well with the thought of having both Graduate and Undergraduate presentations in coordination with the colloquium series. This plan would afford the AGSA with an additional sum of $1000 to secure a keynote speaker for the symposium.
- A date of April 8th has been set, and Lori Eldridge will send out a call for papers. Once submissions have been evaluated, a speaker which seems to unite the themes represented will be suggested.
- The location of the Colloquium has become a problem, as all of the technology rooms of reasonable size in Ellicott are taken on Friday afternoons during the spring '05 semester. It was suggested that perhaps the series take place somewhere on the spine in order to secure a technology room.
- Secondly, it was unanimously agreed to give 'in kind' support of a conference organized by the philosophy dept. titled "Continental Philosophy-examining the margins" as requested by Eric Chelstrom.
- A request for support of a Native Studies project by Meaghan Best was unanimously denied until further information is presented to the AGSA.
- Patricia Mohammed, the GSA treasurer sent an e-mail to Lori to remind everyone to vote on the mandatory student activity fee on Nov 17-19 in the student union.
- At the GSEU meeting of Nov. 10, it was discussed that the meetings will be taking place on a rotational basis at different departments. The meeting following the next one will be hosted by the Anthropology department.
- Finally, the undergraduates are working on a new design for departmental t-shirts and are seeking ideas.
- The meeting was adjourned at 5:30. The next meeting will be announced on the AGSA list serve.
Repectfully submitted,
Emily Hammerl,
AGSA Secretary
