ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Frederick Osmond Gearing

Fred Gearing is Professor of Anthropology Emeritus at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. He received training in cultural anthropology (AB, MA, PhD) from the University of Chicago. He is a student of social organization in small communities, with a special focus on American Indians and in village Greece. Dr. Gearing is the author of The Face of the Fox, a study of an enclave Indian community in the American mid-west, as well as several more technical reports. A research grant brought him to Kardamyli, Greece for two years in 1960-62. Since then he and his family have been frequent visitors, and maintain a home in the village.

Mariekaty Athanasea Georgota

Mariekaty Georgota (Athanasea on her mother's side) has roots in Kardamyli. She was born in Thessaloniki and from 1955 lived in Athens, where she attended the American College. She was a Fullbright Scholar, 1965-1969, as a student of biological sciences. She returned to Greece in 1969, entered the University of Athens and became a student of literature. She has written critical essays, including The Other Turkey, for which she received the Ipektsi Award, 1992, in recognition of this work as a contribution to better Greek-Turkish relations. She has two daughters and resides in Athens and Kardamyli.
