1999 DIRECTORY OF

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETIES AND JOURNALS

INTRODUCTION

This directory of Archaeological Societies began as a discussion on the HistArch mailing list in 1995 when it was noted that some directories are in print but nothing was available electronically to the internet community. A complete directory of State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO's) is available from the National Conference of SHPOs, 444 North Capitol Street N.W., Suite 332, Washington, D.C. 20001-1512, (202) 624-5465 and on the World Wide Web at http://www.cr.nps.gov/pad.shpolist.html. A directory of all State Archaeologists for the United States and its territories is maintained by the National Association of State Archaeologists (see listing). Their website contains both a striaght listing of the membership and single entries by state with a state map. The individual entries appear to be more current than the complete list. They were both last updated in September 1997.

There is a Directory of Archaeological Societies in the 1996 NORTH AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGIST 17(4):355-370, which contains a partial list of the societies in this directory. The NAA Directory is organized by state, region, national, and Canada and includes numerous chapter listings. It also lists some museums, and "friends of site" type organizations. That directory includes other information such as officers, membership/dues, date of organization, chapter names and addresses, and activities. It does not list Fax or e-mail addresses. I have not seen the 1997-1999 editions.

Another good source is the WEDA Directory (World E-mail Directory of Anthropologists) available on the World Wide Web site http://wings.buffalo.edu/go?weda by Hugh Jarvis at the Anthropology Department, State University of New York at Buffalo. It presents a lengthy listing of Universities, Colleges, Museums, Institutes, Centers, Research Labs, government agencies, CRM firms, and some archaeological societies with their regular mailing addresses, phone, Fax, and e-mail as well as the specialties of listed persons, many of whom are archaeologists. WEDA is updated frequently.

There are two important sources for Archaeology - Heritage Conservation and Anthropology on the internet. They are;

INTERNET RESOURCES for HERITAGE CONSERVATION, HISTORIC PRESERVATION and ARCHEOLOGY. Maintained and updated by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. (searchable version coming soon).

http://www.ncptt.nps.gov/ncptt/

Follow the pages to the "Resources" section. Netscape will come up again even if one already has it running. It can no longer be accessed directly by typing in the URL. One can no longer retrieve the entire document via e-mail since it is broken up into sections without a URL of its own.

ANTHROPOLOGY RESOURCES ON THE INTERNET. Version 8.1 by Allen H. Lutins

and updated on 14 March 1998.

The 1998 Administrative and Member Directory of the Society for American Archaeology is 120 pages. The number of sections has been greatly trimmed from previous versions. It has three sections: 6 pages of administrative addresses of board of directors, officers, and committees and their members, 111 pages which list members alphabetically, and 4 pages of advertisements. The 1998 directory came to my mailbox in mid-October. The SAA webpage does have access to a complete list of state Historic Preservation Offices in its "Participate in Archaeology" section. The SAA Administrative and Member Directory is a useful benefit of membership in the SAA. The 1998 SAA Membership Directory is online at http://www.saa.org but it is of limited utility since only current SAA members with a password can access it. As of June 4th, 1999, I still have not received my 1999 SAA Membership Directory.

A recent and excellent source for addresses in the United Kingdom is "The CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGY Directory of British Archaeology, 1998". It has become an annual supplement. The 32 pages contain more than 700 entries with names, address, phone numbers and even some e-mail addresses along with short descriptions of society activities. It is organized into eighteen different sections with an index and introduction. See section on Journals for address of Current Archaeology. It is also available on the web at the CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGY website (at http://www.archaeology.co.uk/direct/dhome98.htm). Their 1999 directory is available as a searchable database at http://www.currentarchaeology.com/database/direct.htm.

In February, 1999, Wayne Neighbors sent an announcement of a new website to several of the archaeology discussion lists. "There is a new web page dedicated to linking with a web browser to Journals and Bulletins with a worldwide or regional focus. Some links offer full contents, but many only offer an index or how to subscribe."

http://anthro.org/journals.htm

The 1999-2000 (first ever) Directory for the Register of Professional Archaeologists was distributed in September of 1999. It is entitled "The Register" and contains 77 pages of address information for professional archaeologists in two sections - alphabetically and by state, Code of Conduct, Standards of Research Performance,Bylaws, Board of Directors,State Historic Preservation Officers and Deputy List, and Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.

The information contained in this directory was garnered, in most part, directly from the organizations cited, either officers or members. I am grateful to the hundreds of individuals who sent me information by e-mail, fax, and phone. This project could not have been done without them.

This list is composed of six sections: National (U.S.)/International, Regional, State, other Journals and Newsletters, Australia, and Canada. No attempt was made to included more than a small sample of organizations from Great Britain due to the large number of them and wide availability of the directory published annually in Current Archaeology. Organization officers and dues or subscription amounts are not included since officers change and amounts of dues/subscriptions are sure to increase over time.
