DISCOURSE is not accepting submissions at this time
Discourse is a peer-reviewed, print journal promoting current work and ideas between graduate students across the four fields. Each issue, we will feature a "universal" topic for four-field consideration. Submissions may be specfic or general in direction. Discourse encourages traditional manuscripts as well as non-traditional texts such as dialogic essays, critiques, interviews, debates, and other forms of information exchange.
Upcoming Themes:
Death
How do we -- as anthropologists and humans -- cope with death? How do we experience death, at the social and biological level? These are only a few issues for consideration. Discourse invites discussion about both social and physical aspects regarding death and dying. Deadline for submissions: To Be Announced
Sex
This issue will address "sex" -- including related themes such as gender -- from social, material and biological perspectives. All themes are welcome. Deadline for submissions: To Be Announced
Do you have an idea for a future theme? Send suggestions to: anthro-discourse@acsu.buffalo.edu
Submission guidelines:
All graduate students enrolled in an anthropology program are encouraged to submit work discussing their original research or critiques. The journal is produced for graduate students across the sub-fields. Thus, papers may be technical in content, but should be written so that anthropologists outside of the author's field and area of specialization can easily grasp concepts discussed. Word count should fall between 5,000 - 8,000 words; book reviews should range between 750-1000 words. Include an abstract no longer than 100 words with your submission. We encourage alternative texts such as dialogue, interviews, biographies, critiques, essays about fieldwork, and other formats. Please see our Common Manuscript Pitfalls, and Friendly Suggestions
Hard Copy Submissions:
1. Five paper copies should be submitted [for our in house files and to send peer reviewers]. Individuals with restricted access to photocopiers may submit one copy.
2. All manuscripts should be double-spaced and printed in a size 12 font.
3. PROOFREAD ALL SUBMISSIONS before sending them for consideration. Poor grammar and spelling is one of the main reasons manuscripts are rejected. Discourse strongly suggests having a good writer [colleague, faculty member, professional editor] look over your text.
4. Use conventional anthropology citation style as used by the American Anthropologist. References should be cited within the text, with a bibliography following the main body. Use end notes, not footnotes.
5. Include your name on each page.
6. The title page of your manuscript should include the title of the article, your name, current mailing address, email address if any, telephone number, and affiliation.
7. Include a disk containing your submission as well as the hard copy. Files should be saved in a common word processing format for a PC-compatible operating system. Discourse prefers files in Word95 with an .rtf extension. Please submit graphics on disk as well.
Electronic Submissions:We also accept submissions via email or attached files. If you are interested in submitting via this medium, please contact Discourse before sending your file. All electronic submissions must follow hard copy guidelines.
Manuscripts that are not accepted will be returned if a self-addressed, stamped envelope is included. Authors may request anonymous referee comments after the peer review process has been completed.
