I) Introduction:

This course will introduce students to telecommunications technology. The students will get an appreciation for the telecommunications technology that surrounds us such as Fax, telephone, radio, as well as management of telecommunications. The students will get an appreciation of the services planned by telecommunications companies. They will learn to identify major components of local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN) and be able to understand issues relating to design of LANs and administration of network operating systems. Additionally, an introductory technical and business perspectives of the Internet and emerging technologies will also be covered in this course.

IV) Grading:

1) UNIX and Internet Project (Individual) 10%

1) Term Paper on Telecommunications Technologies (Individual) 20%

2) Local Area Network (LAN) Project (Individual) 15%

3) Midterm 25%

4) Final Exam 30%

Note: Details about the Projects and Midterm and Final Examinations will be provided in time.

V) Class Participation and Discussion:

Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions. As the materials in this course are quite technical, active participation of students in class discussion would help clarify some of the difficult concepts that are covered in this course. Due to the emerging and dynamic nature of the telecommunications field and to make the course up to date, the instructor will discuss topics and materials that may not have been covered by the prescribed texts. Midterm and Final examinations will be entirely based on materials discussed and covered in class. Students are encouraged to attend all of the classes to do well in this course.
