Annual Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Modeling Course
The
annual pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling course organized by
William Jusko, UB Distinguished Professor, and other faculty members of
the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, was held in May. This
internationally recognized course provides state-of-the-art instruction
on the concepts and applications of mathematical modeling in the
control of drug action. Also providing a lecture was Joga Gobburu, UB
alumnus and director of pharmacometrics at the Food and Drug
Administration. The recent course attracted 19 enrollees from other
countries, primarily in Europe. The interest of the international
science community created an opportunity for UB pharmaceutical sciences
faculty members Jusko, Joseph Balthasar and Donald Mager to bring the
"Buffalo version" of PK/PD modeling to the University of Paris in
January 2009. These three UB faculty members will also be providing a
course for the FDA in White Oak, Maryland, in August 2008 as a public
benefit.
2008 Pharmacy Practice Research Fellows Day
Pharmacy
Practice Research Fellows Day was held June 2 at the UB Center for
Tomorrow. Eight research fellows participated in this event where their
research topics were presented and discussed. Presentation winners
were:
- Jurgen Bulitta, Pharmacometrics/ID Fellow won "Mechanism-based pharmacodynamic modeling of phenotypic tolerance in Pseudmonas aeruginosa for beta-lactams"
- Sarah McCabe, UB/Novartis Drug Development Fellow,
received second-place honors for "Interspecies scaling of ABC123:
estimation of human pharmacokinetics in preparation for first in man
studies"
- Damir Begic, UB/Novartis Drug Development Fellow
received third-place honors for "Comparative daptomycin and vancomycin
activity against staphylococcus aureus hemB mutants expressing the
small-colony-variant (SCV) phenotype"
ICHAPRT's New International Trainee
The
UB SoPPS International Center for HIV/AIDS Pharmacotherapy Research and
Training is hosting Paveena Sonthisombat, an assistant professor with
the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences at Naresuan University in
Thailand, for a two-month training program with the UB Pharmacotherapy
Research Center and ECMC HIV/AIDS Treatment Education Program.
Sonthisombat will receive training in therapeutic drug monitoring,
medication adherence and resistance testing to assist her teaching
duties at the Naresuan University as well as with inpatient and
outpatient HIV services at a nearby hospital.
Alice Ceacareanu Joins Pharmacy Practice Faculty
Alice
Ceacareanu, who holds Ph.D and Pharm.D degrees, has joined the
Department of Pharmacy Practice as an assistant professor. Ceacareanu
will focus her activities in the area of oncology and will be
conducting research at the New York State Center of Excellence in
Bioinformatics and Life Sciences and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
