School News
Research team receives outstanding-manuscript award
Joseph Balthasar, professor of pharmaceutical sciences, and graduate student Dhaval Shah
have been recognized by the American Association of Pharmaceutical
Scientists (AAPS) with an outstanding-manuscript award in modeling and
simulation for "Use of an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor
antibody in a pharmacokinetic strategy to increase the efficacy of
intraperitoneal chemotherapy." The paper was published by the Journal
of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in May 2009. Shah is lead
author; Balthasar is the corresponding author. Additional authors were
Beom Soo Shin from Catholic University of Daegu, South Korea; and Ralph
Bernacki, Jean Veith and Karoly Toth from Roswell Park Cancer
Institute. The research was funded through a grant awarded to
Balthasar's lab by the National Cancer Institute.
The
paper describes the use of mathematical modeling and computer
simulations to guide the development of a new strategy to treat ovarian
cancers. The group is currently pursuing initiation of a clinical trial
to test the combination therapy they describe in ovarian cancer
patients.

AACP Pharmacy Educator Week recognized at UB
The school participated in the American Association of Colleges of
Pharmacy's American Pharmacy Educator Week, Oct. 25-31. Students in the
P2 and P3 classes recognized members of the faculty by making posters
and placing them on faculty office doors, thanking them for all they do
as pharmacy educators and for having guiding them through their years
here at the SoPPS.
The Buffalo News published a letter from Dean Anderson explaining
the important role of pharmacy educators at UB and how they positively
impact health care at the local, regional and national levels.

Alumni continue to support to Kapoor Hall
The school is proud to announce gifts from Robert Miller '59 and Steve Giroux '81
to support patient assessment rooms in Kapoor Hall. The two rooms—2121
MPC Health Care Services/Robert and Sharon Miller Patient Assessments
and Counseling Room; and the Giroux Family Patient Assessment and
Counseling Room—will be specifically designed for training PharmD
students in pharmacy counseling and clinical activities.

Cocktail reception on the Vegas strip
You are invited to the SoPPS Alumni Association reception at the
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) mid-year meeting
in Las Vegas on Monday, Dec. 7, 5:30-7 p.m., in Harrah's Laughlin Room.
Alumni from all our programs, including residency and fellowship
programs, are encouraged to attend.

Swati Patel '03 is currently a managing consultant at Navigant
Consulting in Chicago, working in the area of health care performance
improvement and supply chain.

Morse in new role
Congratulations to Gene Morse
on being named associate director of the translation core at UB's New
York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.
Gene will still be working collaboratively with the school.

New faculty
Welcome to Jun Qu, PhD,
who recently joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences as an
assistant professor. Jun has been working with the school on various
research projects and now joins the faculty to continue his research in
proteomics.
Research on the underlying cause of MS
Murali Ramanathan, PhD, associate professor in the Department of
Pharmaceutical Sciences, and UB colleagues are starting a study that
could overturn the prevailing wisdom of the cause of multiple
sclerosis. The research team will test the possibility that MS symptoms
result from chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency. Ramanathan's
role in the study involves analysis of blood samples for proteins and
other soluble factors associated with central nervous system injury.

Publications
Gene Morse, Linda Catanzaro and Karl Fiebelkorn were lead
authors of "Developing a Bioinformatics and Medication Management
Research Network," an invited paper published in the summer 2009 issue
of California Pharmacist, the quarterly publication of the California
Pharmacists Association. Other contributing authors were Werner
Ceusters, MD; Russell Bessette, MD; Thomas Furlani, PhD; Amy Hayward,
BS; James Notaro, RPh, PhD; Anthony Billitier, MD; Daniel Porreca; and
Bruce Holm.

Presentations
William Jusko, Marilyn Morris, Joe Balthasar and Don Mager
were invited moderators at various symposia presentations at the 2009
American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists meeting.
Recognitions
Joe Paladino has been elected to the board of directors of the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists.

Student Notes
Career Pathways Program
The school's annual Career Pathways Program was held Oct. 26-29. Four
hundred students participated in career counseling presentations held
during a Monday evening alumni dinner. Tom Smith '84 and Renee Flemming '83 gave opening remarks to the students on behalf of the SoPPS Alumni Association.
On Tuesday, all P1 students presented posters on various disease
states. Faculty and alumni evaluated the presentations and made
recommendations to help students enhance their research and data
collection skills.
Closing the program was the Wednesday Career Advisement Program.
More than 30 corporations and exhibitors attended to interview our P4
students for upcoming job opportunities, as well as to give career
advisement to other students in the school.

APhA-ASP develops video showing the importance of pharmacy in health care reform
Congratulations to our UB American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists members Drew Lambert, Michael Krajewski, Oluwa Fabiyi, Kristen Zietler, Jamie Chin, Gauri Rao and Jason Hou
for their creation of the APhA-sponsored health care reform video. This
video is part of an APhA health care policy reform initiative and has
been submitted by our students to local congressional representatives.

PharmD students host cultural night
In
an effort to raise cultural awareness and celebrate cultural diversity,
PharmD students held a Cultural Awareness Night on October 16 in the UB
South Lake Village community room. Chiedza Maponga and Gene Morse gave
a presentation on their International Center for HIV/AIDS
Pharmacotherapy Research and Training (ICHAPRT) program and discussed
the interventions that are currently occurring in Zimbabwe and other
global locations. Over $300 was raised to support the Chitungwiza Utano
Community Partnership of Harare, which provides support and care to HIV
patients. Student organizers of the event were Gauri Rao, Rezarta Ajazi, Jamie Chin and Ali Mohamedali.

Gamma Iota steps out
|
Kappa Psi, Gamma Iota events
Kappa Psi participated in various campus activities in support of the
Healthy Lung Awareness Program and the UBreathe Free program where
students gave information on smoking cessation and healthy pulmonary
function.
Gamma Iota and the pledges of Gamma Iota also participated in the
annual American Diabetes Association Step Out for Diabetes Walk to
Fight Diabetes. Gamma Iota raised over $600 to support diabetes
research and diabetes management and awareness programs.
NCPA Foundation announces scholarships and awards
The UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was well
represented among the 2009 National Community Pharmacists Association's
scholarship recipients.
Gertrude Chimhungwe received an NCPA 2009 Presidential
Scholarship. Gertrude was one of 18 students nationally to receive this
award. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic
achievement, leadership qualities, interest in independent community
pharmacy and extracurricular accomplishments.
Kristen Gawronski received an NCPA 2009 Student Chapter
Outstanding Members of the Year Award. Students are chosen by their
fellow students and faculty based on their involvement with independent
community pharmacy activities and the encouragement they give others to
become involved in patient-friendly entrepreneurial pharmacy.
Kristin Kielar is the recipient of a $5,000 American Foundation
of Pharmaceutical Education Gateway Research Scholarship. Kristin will
be recognized at the 2009 American Association of Pharmaceutical
Scientists meeting. Robert Straubinger, professor, Department of
Pharmaceutical Sciences, is her advisor.
Caitlin Turner is the recipient of the 2009 RX Portfolio Award. Award winners were chosen based on the quality of their portfolio submission. View portfolio.
Puneet Gaitonde presented "Phosphatidylserine reduces antibody
development against human recombinant factor VIII in Hemophilia A mice
by inducing tolerance" at the first annual International Conference on
Immune Tolerance. Sathy Balu-Iyer is her thesis advisor.
Lindsay Rodgers received an $800 scholarship from the Buffalo
Federation of Women. She was recognized at a reception at UB's Center
for the Arts.
