I hope you all had a great Spring Break!! I just wanted to remind you of a potential opportunity to provide some public service to the School of Engineering. As you may have heard (I know a lot of us ignore the mass e-mails), the School of Engineering is in need of 8-10 student volunteers for a few hours of service for this year’s Preview Day. Please refer below for information about Preview day:
Each Spring, the University hosts Preview Day. This year the event will be held on Saturday, April 2nd. This event is organized by the Office of Admissions and is open to freshman and transfer students accepted for the Fall 2005 semester.
The School of Engineering plays a very large role in this event. Many of our labs are open for demonstrations and presentations are given by the Dean and Associate Deans of the school.
The Dean's office is in need of 8-10 student volunteers to help with our Preview Day efforts. It isn't a difficult job and will only take a few hours of your time. We would need your assistance from about 10:00 am until 1:00 pm that day. We'll provide you with juice, donuts and a free t-shirt for your efforts.
If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact Peggy Lane via e-mail at PALANE@eng.buffalo.edu. This would be a great opportunity for some of us to give back to the MAE Department and proudly represent UB’s School of Engineering. It also looks as though they will be providing food and a free t-shirt for the volunteers!!

Hello again,
Just a reminder that
there will be a meeting tomorrow at 5:00pm in Furnas 206. We will be discussing
the initiation ceremony, upcoming events, our financial status, and our new
website (special thanks to Randell). Also, Dan Newman will be at the meeting
asking us some questions about the 334 Labs. He would like some feedback on what
we liked and didn't like about the labs so that he can help to make them better.
See you tomorrow.

PTS members,
Sorry to keep bothering you. One important update:
Rich and I spoke with Dr. Mook about getting some money for our organization.
Dr. Mook noted that he would be willing to give us around $500. He also
mentioned a small painting project that we could do for the department which
would give us $400. THAT'S 400 DOLLARS!!!
We will be painting a new faculty office on Saturday, October 9 starting around
10:00 (that's not too early in the morning). We will move out some of the
furniture, tape up the walls and paint away. It should take no more than three
hours.
I need about 4 volunteers to help out (it's a small office). We will probably
meet up on the third floor of Furnas. I will send more details along as soon as
they are available. Again, this project is a very easy way to raise tons of
money for our organization to do whatever cool projects we want to. PLEASE HELP
OUT. (If you are absolutely incapable of holding a paint brush, then you are
excused from this fund raiser.)
Reply to this message if you are interested in helping out.
Also, Matt Watkins, President of Tau Beta Pi, has asked me to make one more push
for the Pre-Tech Fair Dinner to be held October 4. This is an excellent
opportunity. Even if you are not thinking about a job right now, you can get
some excellent experience in presenting yourself to potential employees. There
are approximately 30 representatives coming from some excellent companies. If
you haven't already responded please get your checks to Deanie today. (see
details below)
Thanks for your time.

FORWARDED MESSAGE:
The Tau Beta Pi Honors Dinner is being held on Monday October 4th at 6:30 pm. It
will last until about 9:00.. you’re only “giving up” 2.5 hours of your life to
get a job or internship that you can write on your resumes for the rest of your
life!!!
This dinner is a GREAT opportunity for students to meet with 15 + companies in a
ONE on ONE setting!!! This means NO LINES like the tech fair where you waste an
hour waiting for people like General Mills to talk to them for one minute. At
the dinner you wait 1 minute at most and talk to them for half an hour and then
go eat dinner with them where you talk some more! You’ll never get a better
opportunity to sell yourself to get a summer internship or job.
Companies thus far.. and there’s still more expected:
General Mills – chemical, electrical, industrial, mechanical
Praxair – chemical, mechanical, electrical, industrial
Moog – electrical, mechanical, aerospace
New York State Dept of Transportation – civil, structural
InfiMed – computer engineering and computer science
Atlantic Testing Laboratories Limited – civil, structural, environmental
Lockheed Martin – computer, electrical, mechanical, aerospace
Honeywell – chemical, industrial
Syracuse Research Corp – computer, electrical, mechanical
US Navy Officer Programs
Ralcorp – electrical, industrial, mechanical, Aerospace
Fisher Price – Computer, electrical, mechanical
Harris RF – Electrical, industrial
General Dynamics Electric Boat – Civil, Electrical, Mechanical
Just think, the $15 cost of the dinner is nothing compared to the amount
of $$$ you’ll make if you land a job with one of these companies. Or
if you’re really poor like most college students and are deciding between $15
for the TBP dinner or $15 for a wegmans run, I’m sure your parents will be happy
to supply the money if it means getting you a job and financial independence
from them. =)
If you haven’t already registered, the deadline for the dinner is this
Wednesday, September 22nd . Checks are being collected by Deanie Hendricks in
414 Bonner. Checks can be written out to Tau Beta Pi – New York Nu for $15.
Please send your resumes to Caitlin Mahon at cemahon@buffalo.edu. One page
limit.
So if you haven’t noticed already, I’m really pushing EVERYONE to ATTEND! We
have a lot of great companies coming and we want them to be able to meet the
best and brightest engineering UB has to offer. It’s a great opportunity to land
a job or even if you aren’t looking for a job to practice your interview skills
and learn about job possibilities in the future! If you have any questions feel
free to email me at mychow@buffalo.edu
Thanks and hope to see you at the dinner!

E-mail from Tom:
Welcome Back! I
know you are probably as thrilled as I am to be back at school after such a
short summer break.
Anyway, to start things off on the right foot (or the left one for that matter),
we are planning to have our first meeting of the semester next Wednesday,
Sepetember 8 at 5:00pm in Furnas 206 (the same room we had the induction
ceremony in).
The plan is to have some pizza and soda, and then on the side we will try to
discuss some of our plans for the upcoming year. Hopefully, we can make plans
for some fund raisers, some volunteer work, and any fun activities. I'm kind of
starving for ideas right now, so I am open to any and all suggestions (legal
that is; robbing banks is not a fund raising option).
Also, if anyone has any dietary restrictions, let me know. I was planning on
getting a pepperoni pizza and then a plain cheese one as well. Drop me a line if
this is a problem for anyone.
