Meetings

Date of next meeting:  TBA

Minutes from Meetings

----Tuesday, February 15th----

-  We discussed the issue of “Active Membership.”

- Just to clarify, once you were initiated as a member of Pi Tau Sigma, you were initiated as a full member for life.  There are not any additional requirements.  The term active membership is meant to indicate chapter members who have been actively participating in the chapter events.  We will discuss at a later meeting the possible benefits of graduating as an active member.

- After discussing this, we voted on how many events per semester each member would have to attend in order to be considered an active member.  Tom proposed that each member should be involved in at least 1 event per semester (2 events per year).  All 23 members who were present agreed that these expectations were more than reasonable; an undisputed approval.

-  As was mentioned in a previous e-mail, we will be participating in Engineering Week this coming week!!  Just as a reminder, we will be participating in the Egg Drop Contest on Tuesday, the 22nd from 11:00-2:00 and the Consumable Tower Contest on Wednesday, the 23rd from 11:00-2:00.  We should have enough people for the Consumable Tower Contest on Wednesday, but we are short on support for the Egg Drop Contest on Tuesday.  If you can make it on Tuesday, your help would really be appreciated.

-  Community Service Activity - On Saturday, March 5th, we will be taking four individuals with Down Syndrome to the UB vs. Akron Basketball game.  The game starts at 2:00 PM.  This would be a great opportunity for you to participate in a community service event and cheer on our great basketball team!!  Please e-mail Rich at rdelecki@buffalo.edu if you are interested.

-  Lastly, we held elections for next year's Officer Positions.  The results of the elections were as follows:

Andrew Leonard - President

Jeffrey Spencer - Vice President

Michael Zaccheo - Treasurer

Craig Ferris - Recording Secretary

Jeremy Krueger - Corresponding Secretary

Congratulations Gentleman on your nominations and unanimous support; I have no doubt that you gentleman will successfully carry on the good standing that our Delta Lambda Chapter has attempted to establish this past year.

----Wednesday, September 8th----

Pre-Job Fair Dinner

Tau Beta Pi will be hosting a Pre-Job Fair Dinner on Monday, Oct. 4th for the members of UB’s engineering honor societies.  Please refer below for information about this event.

The annual technical career fair hosted by UB career services will be held this year on Tuesday, October 5th from 3-6:30 PM in Alumni Arena.  As in the past, Tau Beta Pi will be hosting a more intimate tech fair and dinner the night before, October 4th, at the University Inn for members of Buffalo's engineering honors societies only.  The tech fair will begin at 6:30 PM and will be followed by the dinner.  A select group of engineering companies, including General Mills, NY State Dept of Transportation, Praxair, Lockheed Martin and Honeywell will be present.

The tech fair will allow each honors student to talk more personally to the attending companies.  This is a great opportunity for everyone.  There are no long lines and more personal interactions may be had with the company representatives through the fair and dinner.  The employers who come to this event know that they are meeting the best students UB has to offer.

In order to attend the Tau Beta Pi tech fair and dinner a check of $15 must be given to Deanie Hendrick in 415 Bonner by 5 PM on September 20th.  The check should be made out to Tau Beta Pi - NY Nu Chapter. This fee is used to help pay for the dinner and a resume book that will be made with each students resume and given to the companies at the dinner.  Your resume must be sent to Caitlin Mahon (cem425@hotmail.com) by September 20th.  Please limit you resume to 1 page.

To summarize for those who are interested, checks (or money orders) for $15 dollars need to be made out to Tau Beta Pi NY Nu Chapter and handed into Deanie Hedrick in Bonner 414 by September 20th.  Please include in the memo section of your check that you are a member of Pi Tau SigmaCash will not be accepted.  One page resumes need to be e-mailed to Caitlin Mahon (cem425@hotmail.com) by Sept 20th.

Also, Tau Beta Pi is looking for volunteers to help "host" the Tech Fair on the 5th, which would include helping companies find their tables before the start of the fair and then helping to clean up at the end.  This is another great opportunity to get some one-on-one contact with employers.  If you are interested, contact Matt Watkins (watkins8@buffalo.edu).

UB Intramural Volleyball

We talked about possibly starting a Pi Tau Sigma Intramural Volleyball Team.  Please refer below for information about UB  intramurals:

All games will be held at Alumni Arena on the Amherst Campus.  Conference and Division choices will be made on a first come basis.  As soon as $40.00 guarantee of appearance per team deposit, team captain’s declaration, and completed roster form are submitted to Room 130 Alumni Arena, between 9:30 am and 10:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and 12:30 pm and 5:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday, your team will be granted a franchise in the conference and division of your choice, provided there is room remaining.  The deadline for roster submission is 12:00 noon,Wednesday, September 22, 2004. Regular season play is scheduled to Monday, September 27, 2004.  Each member’s name on the roster form must be accompanied by an appropriate ID number; NO EXCEPTIONS! The only ID numbers to be accepted are UB Student Personal ID numbers. Teams have up until the start of their third contest to solidify their roster.  It is the responsibility of your franchise representative to pick up game rules, attend the league managers meeting on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 8:00 pm in Alumni Arena. It is at the Manager’s Meeting that the final playing schedule will be determined. Any further questions should be directed to Intramural Services at 645-3148.  Please return the appropriate and completed sheets to Room 130, Alumni Arena by the deadline.  Valid ID’s are compulsory for all players at all games!

For additional information; check out http://www.ubathletics.buffalo.edu/recreation/intramurals.shtml.

As you can see, we don’t have too much time to decide whether or not we have enough people to start up a team.  So if you are interested, please let Tom (tliebner@buffalo.edu) know as soon as possible.  If we get enough people who are interested, then we will discuss which day and time would be best to sign up for.

Service

The following are some ideas we had on service projects and community involvement:

-        Stars and Strikes Program – A program which Rich Delecki is involved in where (from what I understood) we would assist mentally and physically challenged children in bowling.  We all agreed that this would be a great program to be involved in.

-        Assisting Dr. Mayne with brainstorming strategies to improve various aspects of the Mechanical Engineering Program (For example; integrating a more hands-on approach to the Instrumentations and Systems labs)

-        We discussed the possibility of tutoring engineering students; but pretty much ruled this out because Tau Beta Pi and some other societies already are involved in tutoring at the college level.  Perhaps we could still discuss the possibility of tutoring kids in lower grade levels (6th-9th grade).

Fund Raising

The following are some ideas we had on fund raising activities (This is important because our funds are real low!...Let’s try to make Rich’s job a little easier):

-        Krispy Kreme Donut Sale

-        Hot Dog sale in front of Sears

Events

The following are some manufacturing plants we talked about possibly taking tours of:

-        American Axle

-        Moog

-        Labatt Brewing company in Canada

We will further discuss these ideas in the next meeting.  But for now, if you have any other ideas for service, fund raising, or events/activities, please share these ideas with Tom (tliebner@buffalo.edu).
