English 309 Spring, 2007 Titus Andronicus response paper:Due in class Monday, January 29. Two pages maximum, double-spaced,printed (typewritten). NO LATE PAPERS ACCEPTED!! NO EXCUSES!! Read Acts 1 & 2 of Titus Andronicus, then focus on Act 2, Scenes 3 and 4. Below are links to two files with excerpts from Act 2, Scenes 3 and 4, showing what has been cut in the movie version, Titus (1999). Cuts amount to a remarkale 63% (Scene 3 excerpt) and 53% (Scene 4). Study these cuts and decide what effect they have on the play. Also below are links to video excerpts from the movie, showing parts of Act 2, Scenes 3 and 4. Study the videos along with the texts showing the cuts, and decide how the movie differs from what you imagine a staged version of the play might be, with all lines spoken. In part, this is a question about media -- text, stage performance, movie, an opportunity to reflect on the different effects of different media, the differing assumptions that each medium has about you and your expectations. You will be helped by Lois Potter's essay, "Seeing and Believing" (available via BISON on-line reserve for English 309). Text excerpts: Act 2, Scene 3. Act 2, Scene 4. [ Get free Adobe Acrobat Reader] Movie excepts: Act 2, Scene 3.
